Children’s development of food literacy competencies

Exploring food literacy at the museum

  • As part of the exhibition Manger! L’exposition qui nourrit at the Musée de la santé Armand-Frappier (2023-2024) and at the Musée Québécois de l’Agriculture et de l’Alimentation (2024-2025), our team is inviting visitors to share their favourite food-related memories. This data will be used to explore what people remember about food and eating. By focusing on the idea of pleasure, we hope to reflect on public health nutrition messages that will encourage people to adopt positive eating habits because it gives them pleasure!

Developing food literacy at school

  • Being able to feed yourself is essential to being independent in life. School is a great place to learn about cooking. La Tablée des chefs’ Les Brigades culinaires program offers high school students cooking workshops to develop their food literacy and their confidence. Our team measures not only the level of food literacy among young people, but also the program’s impact on students across Canada.

Developing food literacy at home

  • Parents have the dual task of not only feeding their children, but also teaching them the food literacy skills they need to feed themselves once they get older. In collaboration with the Association québécoise de la distribution des fruits et légumes and their community partners, we are developing recipe cards and educational videos to support families in acquiring food literacy competencies. We are measuring the usefulness of these resources for families in vulnerable situations.
